University of York
IP Group entered into a highly innovative partnership with the University of York in 2003. This partnership is focussed on the research activities of a flagship plant and microbial genomics centre at the University - the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP). IP Group entered into a wider partnership to cover the entire university in March 2006.
York is one of the most successful research universities in the UK, with world-class activity across the spectrum from the physical sciences, life sciences, and social sciences to the humanities. Though only 40 years old, York has the fifth highest proportion of research funding among UK Universities and over 80% of staff work in international standard (5 or 5*) departments.
CNAP is a research centre based in the Department of Biology at the University of York. CNAP specialises in gene discovery with plant and microbial-based applications, using biology to benefit society and to provide a sustainable future. Target-led programmes undertaken by CNAP are underpinned by fundamental and strategic research, funded by the UK Research Councils, the EU Framework programmes and US funding agencies. CNAP recently received a significant donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The University of York was founded in 1963 with 200 students. Since then, it has expanded to 10,000 students and has over 30 academic departments and research centres. York is also rated 6th out of 172 Higher Education institutions for research, with 18 of its 23 departments rated 5 or 5*. In the last Research Assessment Exercise, carried out by the Higher Education Funding Council for England in 2001, York outperformed all the large civic universities.
