University of Surrey

IP Group signed its partnership agreement with the University of Surrey in February 2006. The University is one of the UK’s research elite with the results of the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise rating nearly 90% of its research as national or international standard.

Surrey also enjoys a strong reputation for innovation and enterprise. Its Research Park is one of the most successful in Europe, home to 140 companies, employing 2,500 staff. Its most successful spin-out company, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), is a world leader in the design, build and launch of small satellites. In 2005, SSTL was awarded a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation. In total, the University has received three Queen’s Awards and two Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for its academic and entrepreneurial activities.

Surrey is 5th in the league table for research-led universities. Three research groups – Electronic Engineering (including Computing), Subjects Allied to Medicine, and Sociology – achieved the maximum 5** rating, whilst seven other areas, including Psychology, Physics and European Studies, gained grade 5 ratings.

Although originally founded as a science and engineering-focussed institution – and enjoying a world class reputation in these areas - Surrey now offers excellence in a broad range of subject areas, spanning science, engineering, human sciences, arts, business management and medicine. The 2005 Guardian League Table ranked Surrey in overall 18th position out of 122 universities for the quality of its undergraduate programmes, with six in the top ten.
