University of Oxford

Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and has been in continuous existence for nine centuries. The University of Oxford is a member of the Russell Group of 19 research-intensive universities.

The commercialisation partnership was originally between the Chemistry Department at the University of Oxford and Beeson Gregory in 2000 before it was transferred into a subsidiary company, IP Group, in August 2001.

The University of Oxford's chemistry department is the largest in the western world. Historically, staff at the department have been awarded 10 Nobel prizes in the last 80 years and today the department has a 5* rating (the top rating possible under the UK's 5 yearly research assessment exercise).

The Department of Chemistry at Oxford has generated over £80 million to the University as a result of its spin-out activities. Realised gains from the departmental spin-outs exceed £40 million, with about £20 million of unrealised gains in quoted companies and further holdings in private companies. Prior to IP Group's partnership, the Department had already established an entrepreneurial record having created a number of successful spin-out companies including Oxford Asymmetry International, Oxford Molecular Group, Medisense, Summit and Oxford Catalysts.
